In June 2000, Maryland joined the Virginia-Maryland-District of Columbia Joint Legislative Commission on Interstate Transportation by letter of understanding with the Virginia legislature. The Commission considers critical regional transportation issues, particularly those affecting the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. These issues include traffic gridlock, the expansion of mass transit, and the development of land use guidelines that embody "smart growth" principles.
In June 2001, the Commission was charged with studying issues involved in creating a regional transportation authority (Chapter 632, Acts of 2001). On February 11, 2003, the Commission submitted that report to the General Assemblies and governors of Maryland and Virginia, the Mayor and City Council of the District of Columbia, and local government officials.
The Commission last met in 2003.
